A new version of iFolder has been released but the former version is still available. Why maintain two versions?

iFolder serves the needs of the individual user by securely backing up data. It is an effective solution for organizations with users who need a simple, secure backup of their desktop or laptop files, with emphasis on data privacy. However, the architecture is not well-suited for developing sharing capabilities or supporting multiple iFolders per user. iFolder Share focuses on the need for sharing and document collaboration and offers greater flexibility for developing new features around supporting individual and workgroup file-access needs.

When should I consider using iFolder?

Consider iFolder if the following describe your circumstance:

  • File sharing is not needed.
  • Your primary use of iFolder is to back up user files on local machines.
  • Your files need to be encrypted

When should I consider using iFolder Share?

  • Consider iFolder Share if the following describe your circumstance:
  • Sharing is the primary reason for using iFolder.
  • You do or might use Linux.
  • You do or might use Mac OS X.
  • You use multiple computers and need flexibility in sharing data across these computers.
  • You want to create a virtual network of different types of computers.

What can I do with iFolder that I cannot do with iFolder Share?

Encrypted file storage—Files synchronized with iFolder can be stored encrypted using a user-supplied pass phrase, adding a level of security to users' files. Files stored encrypted on the server cannot be viewed anyone not logged into your account. iFolder Share does not support the encryption of files on the server.

What can I do with iFolder Share that I cannot do with iFolder?

  • Users can have multiple iFolders.
  • Users can share any of their iFolders.

What are Multiple iFolders?

Using iFolder Share, users can designate any existing folder on their desktop as an iFolder. For example, users can specify My Documents as an iFolder. With iFolder, only a single folder could be the iFolder, which, by default, is My Documents. By selectively designating individual folders as iFolders, users can better organize the distribution of data across multiple computers and with other users.

What is iFolder Sharing?

With support for multiple iFolders, users can selectively designate any folder as an iFolder and share it with other users to collaborate on documents or simply to share information. Depending on how users organize data, it not be practical for them to share their entire data set with others. Having multiple iFolders makes it easier to share appropriate data with other users.

Can I share files between iFolder and iFolder Share?

No, the services of iFolder and iFolder Share are not compatible. The iFolder and iFolder Share clients can be installed and running on the same computer, but they cannot share files with each other.

Can an iFolder client access files on an iFolder Share server?

No, the iFolder client is not compatible with an iFolder Share server.

Can a user with iFolder on a Windows workstation at home and iFolder Share on a Linux workstation at the office share files interchangeably between the platforms?

A user can have an iFolder client on a Windows workstation and iFolder Share on a Linux workstation, but the files cannot be shared between the two iFolder services.

Will I be able to set up multiple iFolders, share one or two and selectively sync up some iFolders with a second workstation?

Yes, you can set up multiple iFolder “roots” on each workstation, as well as selectively sync different folders on each workstation where you have enabled iFolder. Each iFolder “root” can then be shared selectively with different users or workstations.

If two people are working on the same file, how are conflicts resolved?

The iFolder client will detect conflicts and notify the users of the conflicts and allow them to manually resolve the version conflicts.

How is the user notified of any conflicts?

When there are conflicts in an iFolder, the iFolder client gives the user the option to be notified by a pop-up window when a conflict occurs. The iFolder client also indicates which iFolders have conflicts in the iFolder client window.

Will any of the new search tools by Google (Google desktop), Novell QuickFinder Server or other companies' file search tools work on iFolder?

Yes. iFolder does not make any changes to the files as they are stored locally on the PC. Ways are also being considered to integrate open source search solutions under development—such as Beagle and Dashboard—that would improve searching within an iFolder.
