Using iFolder to protect data of various programs
Existing data
a. Open ‘My Documents’ folder
b. Open the new iFolder
short cut on the desktop
c. Drag and drop important files from ‘My Documents’ to “Protected”
d.
Update Desktop shortcuts to reflect the new location.
e. To quickly
find this new protected folder from any program, browse to your desktop
and double click on the yellow ifolder icon.
"My Documents” (this will vary with different versions
of Windows)
a. Right click on “My Documents” on desktop > properties
b.
Select ‘move’ and browse to desktop to find iFolder shortcut
Internet Explorer Favorites
a. Download the freeware version of TweakUI from the CNET*
Web site. This program is used to change the location of your Favorites.
b. Locate
TWEAKUI.EXE and extract the files to a directory on your hard
drive. Make a note of this location.
c. Go to the directory where
you extracted TWEAKUI.EXE > right-click
TWEAKUI.INF, and then click Install.
d. Go to the Control Panel
and click TweakUI.
e. Click the My Computer tab.
f. From the Special Folders drop-down
box, select Favorites.
g. Take note of the location of your Favorites
directory and then go to Windows Explorer and copy the Favorites directory
into your ‘Protected’ directory.
h. Change the location of the
Favorites directory in TweakUI to the location of your ‘Protected’ directory.
QuickBook
a. Create a folder in “Protected” called
qbook
b. Locate your existing quickbook file by opening quickbook,
select > file > open
company. This will display a dialog box which will have the file
name you are using as well as the directory and drive location.
Remember this
file name and location and close quickbook.
c. Find this file
through My Computer and move it to the new folder ‘qbook’ just
created in “Protected”.
d. Open quickbook. It will not find
your file and will give you a dialog box to navigate to it’s new
location. Once you open the file from the new location, it will
find it later.
e. Don’t forget to create a subfolder called ‘qbook\backup’ for
performing backups when reminded by quickbooks and storing them
in this folder which is also protected by iFolder.
MYOB
a. Use the same instructions as quickbook
Peachtree
a. Open “c:\windows\pcw80.ini” and
find DATAPATH=statement.
b. Move the identified folder and contents
to your \Protected\ folder.
c. Change the DATAPATH= (new location).
Save and close pcw80.ini
d. The pcw80.ini file name may vary on
Peachtree versions. (pcw80, paw80, pfa80, ptfirst7, paw7)
Quicken
a. The name of the files should be identified in the blue title
bar of Quicken.
b. Quicken consists of 4-6 files with extension starting
with a ‘Q’
c. Make a backup and close Quicken.
d. Move the files from the Quicken
program directory to ‘c:\My
Documents\ Protected \quicken’
e. Open quicken. It will not find your file and will give you a dialog
box to navigate to it’s new location. Once you open the file from
the new location, it will find it later.
Outlook (not recommended)
a. Create a folder in “Protected” called
email.
b. Outlook uses a file with a ‘pst’ extension. It can be
found by searching for Outlook.pst Or it may have your login name. Shutdown
Outlook and move the file to ‘c:\My Documents\Protected\email’
c.
Start Outlook and navigate to find the pst file.
Outlook Express
a. Create a folder in “Protected” called
email.
b. Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder
c. Click ‘Change’ and browse to ‘c:\My
Documents\Protected\email’
Palm
a. Create a folder in “Protected” called
palm.
b. Tools > Options > Data Directory
c. Browse to ‘c:\My Documents\Protected\palm’
Netscape
a. Create a folder in “Protected” called
netscape
b. Edit > Preferences > Mail Servers > Local Mail Directories
c.
Choose > browse to ‘c:\My Documents\Protected\netscape’
Word
a. Tools > Options > File Locations Tab
b. Select Documents > Modify
c. Navigate to ‘\My Documents\Protected’
d. Select Save tab > Check
'Always create backup copy'
e. Click ‘OK’ > ‘OK’
Excel
a. Tools > Options > General Tab
b. Modify ‘Default file Location’ box to read ‘c:\My
Documents\Protected’
c. Click ‘OK’
Access
a. Tools > Options > General Tab > Default
Database Folder
b. Modify ‘Default Database Folder’ box to read ‘c:\My
Documents\Protected’

PowerPoint
a. Tools > Options > Save Tab
b. Modify ‘Default file Location’ box to read ‘c:\My
Documents\Protected’
c. Click ‘OK’
If iFolder doesn’t support collaboration, how do I use
QuickBook (or any other program) at the office and at home? Use this
routine:
a. Office computer is turned on > connect to Internet > iFolder
synchronizes > disconnect from Internet (if on dial-up)
a. Daily work
using data protected by iFolder. (QuickBook)
b. Connect to Internet > iFolder synchronizes > disconnect from
Internet > turn off PC
c. After business hours (in other words – after office computer
synchronizes at the end of the day.) > Home computer is turned on > connect
to Internet > iFolder synchronizes > disconnect from Internet (if
on dial-up)
d. Evening work using data protected by iFolder. (Quickbook)
e.
Connect to Internet > iFolder synchronizes > disconnect from
Internet > turn off PC
f. Repeat each day.
g. The office should perform this routine
every day, even if no work is done at home to create a habit. The synchronization
at home is only
necessary if work is to be done at home.
How do I change the protected folder?
a. Double click the yellow folder in the system tray.
b. Select ‘File’ > ‘Set
Folder Location’
c. This will log out of iFolder.
d. A warning dialog will appear
with a ‘browse’ button to
select the folder to be ‘Protected’ by iFolder.
*** Remember to perform regular backups of your databases and financial
data for point in time restoration in the event of data corruption.
