Standby Server on the Cheap
What would your business do when the network
server is down? Post invoices by hand? Tell customers
to call back tomorrow? Close the doors and go home? None
of these are realistic options. But we can't afford
a second server just in case the primary one fails a
few days a year. On the other hand we lose hundreds of
dollars per hour when the server is not available. What
are we to do, take our chances?
Just as you have a space saver spare tire you can have
a standby server. You already have one if you have a
small operation (25 or less workstations) and didn't
know it. In an emergency, you need something that will
get you home. It doesn't have to be as fast or
capable.

Here's how it works. IFolder is running on your
primary server backing up files every 15 seconds. The
same account is also running on a robust workstation
in your office downloading the same files that are on
the server. This is the first step. All files that you
need are ready. Creating Window's shares on the
workstation that are the same as the server is the next
step. The last step is only necessary when the server
goes down. Change the workstation name to be the same
as the server and reboot. When the workstation restarts,
the network will see the computer with the same shares
enabling all links and programs to work correctly. Just
remember to rename and reboot the workstation before
bringing the server back on line.
Is there any other way to have a standby server for
$20 per month?
